School Programs
Daniel Bagley provides the following academic programs and resources to support the achievement and growth of all elementary students at the school.
One of our unique features is our public Montessori program, which we offer in addition to our contemporary K-5 classrooms. Those familiar with a Montessori environment will see an emphasis on conceptual and experiential learning. All Montessori classroom teachers at Daniel Bagley are accredited by the state of Washington and have AMS Montessori certification.
Artist in Residence
For the 2008-2009 school year, our Artist in Residence is Elizabeth (Beth) Shermer.
Ms. Schermer has been in the field of education for 20 years, teaching primary-middle school students.
In her work at the primary level she integrated music into every aspect of her classroom including daily song circles.
Along with Ms. Schermer, we host professional writers and poets at the school.
Everyday Mathematics Curriculum
Everyday Math is a K-6 program developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project in conjunction with the National Science Foundation (NSF),
and was adopted by the Seattle School Board as the core math program for Seattle Elementary Schools in 2006. Everyday Math provides a balanced approach
to math instruction by teaching basic computation skills and practice, while providing students with ample opportunities to apply their mathematical understanding in real world situations.
In 2007, each of our teachers attended workshops to prepare them to teach with these new materials. We will continue to have professional development throughout this year
and we will also have two teachers from Daniel Bagley who will function as Everyday Math trainers for our school as well as Olympic View School.
We also host a Family Math Game night in the spring. For more information about Everyday Math, visit the Everyday Mathematics website.
Writer's Workshop at Daniel Bagley
Daniel Bagley is proud to be one of five elementary schools chosen to be a part of the Writers Workshop Program for the Seattle School District.
All of our classroom teachers and a few of our specialists have attended trainings in the summer of 2008 (a week long institute) on how
to implement best practice teaching regarding writing. Columbia/Teachers College graduate students and professors lead the training at Cleveland High School.
This program not only gives us the use of research-based curriculum, but also the use of a coach from the district as well as on-going trainings throughout the year with folks from Columbia/Teachers College.
