The Goal
Through activities in the 2006–2007 school year, we used the 100th anniversary of the school as a wonderful vehicle through which elementary students studied local urban, cultural, and environmental history and geography.
Our students find the school an object of inherent interest; it is, after all, the community of which they are a vital part. They naturally possess interest in learning about the school's past: how the day was organized, what subjects students learned, how classrooms were structured and disciplined.
Like all schools, Daniel Bagley has changed immeasurably over the years, often in response to broader social changes: demographic shifts, economic booms and busts, technological change, neighborhood transformations. The study of Bagley's history is simultaneously the study of the history of its surrounding community, the city of Seattle, and even the United States and the world.
Particularly in the older grades, teachers were able to widen the circle beyond Daniel Bagley itself to help students see the impact of far-reaching historical events upon a place they know.
Dedicated to the 10,000+ alumni, teachers, and staff of Daniel Bagley School.
